CAROLINA SLAMS THE DOOR ON HOG FARMS
April 24, 2001--AgWeb News--Bob Coffman

South Carolina's hog industry is not about to get any bigger if the state's
governor has his way. He made his feelings very clear at a meeting in Latta,
S.C. Monday, declaring

"These hog farms are not welcome here,"

as he signed an executive order putting a hold on plans for two farms to build enough combined capacity to raise 32,000 head of hogs. Action by Gov. Jim Hodges imposes a 15-day moratorium on the construction of swine facilities and large waste lagoons in the state.

"We are a state of history and promise. We cannot allow our rich and vibrant quality of life to be eroded by reckless out-of-state hog factory farms," he said.
